DIY Clip In Bangs- The Zig Zag Extensions

I want bangs… but only sometimes. To be honest, I’m too scared to cut my own hair, especially if it’s going to be a short cut and right in front of my face. It’s a scary commitment, and if I end up not liking the results, it’s a hard recovery to come back from. I came to a conclusion that the best way to have bangs is to have extensions, that way I can have the best of both worlds.

Upon my deep search for the very best bangs bucks can buy, a small voice in the back of my head kept softly calling out for my attention. Ignoring it, I kept searching and stumbled upon a set of extensions that were so beautiful and seamless. The blue purchase button was one click away. “But wait” the faint voice called out once more. I stoped my finger from clicking. Then and there a vision of a black duster bag came forth into my memory. Well tucked away hanging in a far dark corner in my closet, a thick set of hair hung on the rack. For my wedding- good money was spent on those extensions and only for one or two nights had I truly worn them since.

“Don’t spend another penny” it said to me. I shut my laptop, opened my closet and unzipped the duster bag. There it lye, wefts upon wefts of thick long luscious locks that I already owned.

If you have extra extensions laying around and are wanting to try a new look by having bangs- don't spend another dime. Don’t have a risky haircut. I’ve got the perfect DIY clip in extension for you, and it’s not what you think it is!

There’s a few “how to” videos and blogs on “do it your self bang extensions’, and all are pretty much the same. Others would typically line the extensions horizontally on the top of their head. The outcome, in my opinion, doesn’t use the extensions to it’s fullest. Also- because pre-existing extensions are originally made to be hidden underneath natural hair- the edge where everything is sown and held together can be seen to the visible eye if placed directly on top of the head. It will be quite obvious that you are wearing extensions.

The “Zig Zag Method” looks more natural. Though it won’t hide the seam completely, it does a damn good job and I’ll show you how to create it.

To Create Bang Extension You’ll Need:

4 inch hair weft with 2 clips

1 extra clip

Thread and needle

Hair Band

Hair Straightener

Comb

Scissors

The original hair extensions I’m using is a from the Irresistible Me collection.

I’m using a 4 inch weft with 2 clips.

When I received my set of hair- the company included an extra weft that came with the package. If you don’t have an extra clip, they can easily be found online.

Sew the extra clip to the back side making sure it’s positioned in the middle of the weft.

Once the extra clip in is sown in, the next step is to clip it onto your hair.

Part your hair with a comb into three zig zag lines. You can start in the direction most comfortable to you, but it’s important to know where you started the zig zag.

This will determine which clip you will first clip onto your hair.

For my hair- I started my zig zag from the left side of my hairline going up to my right side. Therefor the left-most clip will be my 1st clip.

If you part from the right side going up left- you’ll start with the right-most clip. Watch the gif below, and you’ll get a good idea on what I’m talking about.

After- tie your hair back into a tight ponytail.

Straighten your extensions first before clipping them into your hair.

Make sure the front side of the weft with two clips are facing towards you.

The left-most clip will be my 1st clip-in. Once it’s clipped in, flip the extensions over to the 2nd clip- clipping it onto the second zag hair line. Then flip the extensions a final time to the 3rd clip- clipping it onto the last zag hair line.

It is VERY IMPORTANT that you practice clipping your extensions in. You’ll want to practice a couple more times before cutting the extensions.

Once you’ve practiced and are comfortable with the placement of the extensions, it’s time to cut it to your desired length.

When you are done cutting, take your extensions off. You will noticed that the over all cut is a slant. This is normal! The zig zag and layering of the weft will even out once the extensions is clipped onto your hair.

You will not be able to hide the final clip completely but it’s far above on your head and less visible.

I was able to tricked my husband into thinking that I cut my own hair. He was surprised to find out it wasn’t real!

“I created the Zig Zag Method because it’s a better and far more efficient way of using the entire hair extension. By layering the weft- it creates thicker bangs. Also the “V” positioning of the extensions creates a more natural look of how real bangs are parted and cut.”
